Motion sensor with range and time...?

Postby cmathur » Mon Jan 30, 2012 5:32 pm

Hi,
I need a motion sensor that can detect the different distances from the sensor and also how long the person has been at that distance? Which sensor can i use to accomplish the same?
Thought of using the 1111_0 - Motion Sensor but since it is InfraRed based, i am not sure if it can differentiate between various distances from the sensor.
Another sensor that i have in mind is 1128_0 - MaxBotix EZ-1 Sonar Sensor but i am not sure if that will accomplish what i want.
Help is appreciated!

The sonar sensor is a good choice, any of the Sharp IR sensors are good as well. I should point out, these sensors can all tell you the distance an object is from the sensor. None of them can record time. For that you would need to put a clock in your program that keeps track of time.

Thank you!
We are implementing an application for a client and part of it is motion detection. So i am looking at a procurement of 100-200 sensors. The SONAR sensor has to be soldered, an additional step that we could totally do away with!!
1111_0 - Motion Sensor can be just clipped to the board and seems easy to setup. Is it a sharp IR sensor?
And if we go with SONAR sensor, are there sellers that solder it to a board and supply?

Thanks!

The 1111_0 does not measure distance, it only detects motion within its field of view. The Sharp IR sensors are 3520_0 - 3522_0. But the max range we sell is 150cm. Not sure if that is a long enough range for you.

Can you please tell me the range the 1128_0 - MaxBotix EZ-1 Sonar Sensor detects?

From page 10 of the product manual for the 1128:

Current Consumption 3mA
Supply Voltage 3.0VDC to 5.25VDC
Ping Rate 20Hz
Sonar Range 6 inches to 254 inches (6.45m)
Range Resolution 1 inch

Thanks for your help Brian.

Any suggestions on the kit? Can i use a 2/2/2 with the Sonar Sensor or would i need 8/8/8?
