detecting fast moving objects

Postby sling » Sun Aug 15, 2010 10:45 am

I'm trying to detect fast moving objects ( birds ) within 2m - ideally get their range.

I've tried both the MaxSonar and the Sharp IR sensors. They work ok at lower speeds ( Sonar is better ) but both fail as the object moves more quickly.

The Sonar sensor samples 20 times/sec. So it seems this is not fast enough.

I have found a sensor that can sample up to 200 times / sec.

However, this sensor would require me to input a pulse.

I'm a programmer - my hardware skills are minimal.

So the questions -

How hard would it be to build something that could input the pulse at 100 - 150 times a sec ?

Is there an easier way to do this ?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I am interested in how, or if, you succeeded with your detection of fast moving objects (birds). I am delving into exactly the same issue (though only need to detect flying birds, not gauge distance).

I have been looking/considering using I2C sonars from Maxbotics (http://www.maxbotix.com/Ultrasonic_Sensors/MB7040.htm). These have a 40Hz read rate, twice that of your 20Hz rate. They also have an added bonus of being more 'focused' in their sonar range.

Any lessons you have learnt since your post would be appreciated.

Thanks
