Stepper (3327_0 ) doesn't reach full RPM.

Post by zaneytop »

First time controlling a stepper motor. I am using the Phidgets GUI to figure out how to control this motor before writing a custom program. Per the specifications for the motor, my power supply is currently set to 12VDC and 1.68A as current limit. Current limit is set to 1.68A in the Bipolar Stepper Controller program as well.

My hardware:
- NEMA-17 Stepper, 26.85:1 Gearbox: https://www.phidgets.com/?tier=3&catid= ... prodid=346
- 4A Stepper Phidget: https://www.phidgets.com/?tier=3&catid= ... rodid=1119

I started by finding the rescale factor https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0n9P9SmNVA. I came up with 0.004185 but found this to be wrong. I timed a rotation that should have taken 1 second, but took 6 seconds. Dividing by a factor of 6 now makes the displayed velocity match reality.

Rescale factor: 1.8 deg/ 26.85 gear ratio = 0.067 deg step angle. 0.067 deg step angle * 1/16 step (motor controller) = 0.004185. Is there another thing I have to consider?

My second issue. The max rpm for this motor is 80 rpm. The max rpm I can spin it at is ~25 rpm. After some Google searching, I found this is often due to two reasons:
1) Voltage being too low.
2) Increase the step pulse frequency.

Before I increase voltage above the recommended voltage stated in the motor specifications, is there a more obvious reason keeping the motor from spinning at max rpm?
